Beach accessible wheelchairs are available for hire on Wirral

Wheelchairs specially designed for people with reduced mobility or reduced mobility are now available for hire at two of Wirral’s most popular beaches – free of charge.

As part of a project involving the Wirral Council and the Cheshire and Wirral Partnership NHS, six beach wheelchairs have been purchased which will be available to reserve and use free of charge at the Floral Pavilion in New Brighton and the Wirral Watersports Center in West Kirby.

Cllr Yvonne Nolan, Chair of the Adult Social Care and Public Health Committee, said: “We know this is something a lot of people have been asking for for some time, so it’s great that we’ve been able to provide funding to not only buy the equipment, but also to rent it for free.

“This specialized piece of equipment will provide access to the beach and water to people who were previously denied it due to disability or mobility issues and will bring a lot of enjoyment to using it.”

There are three different types of wheelchairs: two require manual pushing and one electric.

All chairs available for hire are equipped with support straps, cushions and harnesses. Any support or additional accessory necessary for the use of the chairs must be provided by the user.

Residents and visitors can reserve the chairs through the Floral Pavilion website to rent from this venue or the Wirral Leisure reservation system to rent from the Watersports Centre.
